Message from the IEEE CAS Vice President, Technical Activities: Vojin G. Oklobdzija

Vojin G. OklobdzijaI would like to thank the Board of Governors for their vote to appoint me for another 2 years term as Vice President of Technical Activities. I have served a two year term 2010-2012 and my new term will end December 31st, 2013. The past two years have been challenging with respect to the two important tasks that I started: (a) defining a “vision” of CAS (b) evaluation and organization of Technical Committees. I expect to complete those tasks in my second term. Therefore I expect this term to be both difficult and challenging. I hope I will be able to deliver and justify the confidence that was given to me.

For the last 50 years we have been riding a “technology revolution” which started with the invention of Integrated Circuit in 1958, enabling the integration of a digital computer… More »

Proposals Selected for Funding Under the CASS Outreach Initiative 2011/2012

Firstly, on behalf all the Outreach Evaluation Committee, I would like to thank all proposers for submitting a diverse range of exciting proposals to the initiative. We received 42 proposals for a total requested funding of over US$ 320K. Each proposal was carefully reviewed by the Committee. The 16 proposals listed below were judged most suitable for full or partial support and were awarded funding. Detailed additional feedback will be sent via email to all proposers in due course.

Unfortunately all funds allocated for the Outreach Initiative 2012 were allocated in this round (together with extra funding to support WiCAS/GoLD activities), so the next Call for Proposals for the Outreach Initiative is scheduled to open in the Fall (dates will be communicated on the website early in September 2012) for activities in 2013.

All successful proposers should immediately contact the… More »

    CAS-FEST

Brain-Machine Interfaces (BMI) and Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI) are emerging topics, which cover many disciplines, from signal processing to biomedical engineering. These devices and algorithms translate physiological activity into machine language, which can be used to restore or enhance, either partially or completely, the human perceptive or sensory-motor functions. Their numerous applications and fervent reception in the medical community have turned BMI into one of the most dynamic and interesting topics in the IEEE community. The implementation of complete BMIs offers many circuits and systems design challenges, which include neural sensors, wireless transmission, harvesting energy, signal processing activities, low-power and low-voltage circuits, material sciences and biocompatibility. The research community is now especially focused on the implementation of wireless sensors and biosignal processing.

The second CAS-FEST event is organized jointly by the following IEEE Societies: Circuits and Systems (CAS), Engineering, Medicine and… More »

    Gustav Robert Kirchhoff Award

This award is named for Gustav Robert Kirchhoff, a physicist who made important contributions to the theory of circuits using topology and to elasticity. Kirchhoff’s laws allow calculation of currents, voltages, and resistances of electrical circuits extending the work of Ohm. His work on black body radiation was fundamental in the development of quantum theory.

Recipient selection is administered through the Technical Field Awards Council of the IEEE Awards Board.

Sponsor: IEEE Circuits and Systems Society

Presented to: An individual or multiple recipients where all members of the group could be judged to have made a crucial contribution(s) to the overall outcome.

Scope: For outstanding contributions to the fundamentals of any aspect of electronic circuits and systems that has a long-term significance or impact.

Prize: The award consists of bronze medal, certificate, and honorarium.

Basis for judging: In the evaluation… More »
