Gustav Robert Kirchhoff Award

This award is named for Gustav Robert Kirchhoff, a physicist who made important contributions to the theory of circuits using topology and to elasticity. Kirchhoff’s laws allow calculation of currents, voltages, and resistances of electrical circuits extending the work of Ohm. His work on black body radiation was fundamental in the development of quantum theory.

Recipient selection is administered through the Technical Field Awards Council of the IEEE Awards Board.

Sponsor: IEEE Circuits and Systems Society

Presented to: An individual or multiple recipients where all members of the group could be judged to have made a crucial contribution(s) to the overall outcome.

Scope: For outstanding contributions to the fundamentals of any aspect of electronic circuits and systems that has a long-term significance or impact.

Prize: The award consists of bronze medal, certificate, and honorarium.

Basis for judging: In the evaluation… More »

The Silicon Valley Chapter with Distinguished Lecturers

NetEvo is a new computational framework designed to help study the dynamics and evolution of complex networks. It provides flexible tools for the simulation of dynamical processes on networks and methods for the evolution of underlying topological structures. The concept of a supervisor is used to bring together dynamics and evolution in a coherent way. The supervisor aims to rewire the network topology and alter model parameters such that a user specified performance measure is minimized. This performance measure can make use of current topological information and simulated dynamical output from the system. To promote widespread use all tools are free to use and released under an open-source license. For further information, to see some examples of NetEvo in action, or to get involved with development check out the project website at http://www.netevo.org

IEEE Defines Energy Storage Systems

IEEE today announced the launch of the IEEE P2030.2 Working Group (WG). T“Energy storage is a top-level priority for the Smart Grid, given increasing energy demand and the value storage adds to the functioning of the electric grid and to renewable electric power resources,” said Mark Siira, IEEE P2030.2 WG Chair, Manager, Applied Technology, Kohler Company and expansion in energy storage.

The P2030.2 WG will develop a guideline for discrete and hybrid energy storage systems that are integrated with the electric power infrastructure, including end-use applications and loads. The “Guide for the Interoperability of Energy Storage Systems Integrated with the Electric Power Infrastructure” will help users achieve greater understanding of energy storage systems by defining technical characteristics. It will also illustrate how discrete and hybrid systems may be successfully integrated with and used compatibly as part of the electric power.… More »
