2025 IEEE Gustav Robert Kirchhoff Award Recipient
Join us in celebrating Giovanni De Micheli on receiving the prestigious 2025 IEEE Gustav Robert Kirchhoff Award.
Giovanni De Micheli
For fundamental contributions to the design of systems and networks-on-chip
Giovanni De Micheli pioneered methods that map algorithmic descriptions of computation and communication into digital circuits and networks. His work has enabled designers to conceive electronic integrated circuits and systems on chips by means of high-level language models, and then to compile such models into detailed descriptions ready for manufacturing. He has been instrumental in the creation of the $18 billion Electronic Design Automation industry. His most impactful contribution is the automated design of networks on chips (NoCs). In his visionary approach, he conceived IC components communicating through data packets, and he created the technological path to make NoCs energy efficient and competitive on silicon.
An IEEE Life Fellow, De Micheli is Professor and Director of the Integrated Systems Laboratory and of the EcoCloud Centre, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland.
The IEEE Gustav Robert Kirchhoff Award is a prestigious IEEE Technical Field Award, sponsored by the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society. This award is named for Gustav Robert Kirchhoff, a physicist who made important contributions to the theory of circuits, using topology, and to elasticity. Kirchhoff's laws allow calculation of currents, voltages, and resistances of electrical circuits extending the work of Ohm. His work on black body radiation was fundamental in the development of quantum theory.
Recipient selection is administered through the Technical Field Awards Council of the IEEE Awards Board.
