CHAIR REPORT ON THE TC CHAIRS MEETINGS (Jan. 11, 2002, Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ):

1. Several different situations for TCs

  • TC on Analog Signal Processing had the largest number of paper to review (>370) with 40 members involved (NCAS TC >100 and >20).
  • TC on NN and CNN had a relative small number of papers at ISCAS. Proposal of merging the committees (at least for the ISCAS track).
  • TC on CAS for communication is rapidly growing.
  • TC on CAD has not ISCAS as its major conferences (second choice submission).
  • TC on Gigascale and Nanoelectronics and on Biomedical Engineering has great importance in “spreading” new technologies inside CAS. VP opinion: Play an active role as much as possible.2. “Benchmarking” of CAS papers
  • Project initiated with previous VPs.
  • Goals are (a) to give publicity to the most important papers, (b) to give a comprehensive overview over a specific research topic.
  • Discussion:
    * Prof. Michael Green started a debate regaridng benchmark publications (as proposed by M. Hasler).
    * Dr. G. M. Maggio pointed out that, at least in the case of printed publications, the IEEE may grant authorization to re-publish manuscripts without violating copyright laws. Web-based publications need to be investigated further.
    * Prof. Tamas Roska encouraged the use of CASE (Circuits and Systems Expositions). This is one of the options for submitting a paper to TCAS-I (other than a full paper or a transactions brief). This could be one way to deal with the benchmark publications.

TECHNICAL ACTIVITIES PROMOTIONS:

  • Prof. Rui de Figueiredo announced a new conference relevant to the CAS society: the 1st International Conference on Circuits and Systems for Communications (ICCSC’02), St. Petersburg State Technical University, St. Petersburg, Russia, June 26-28 2002.
  • Prof. Ljiljana Trajkovic, a Special Sessions Co-Chair of ISCAS 2003 (with Prof. Gert Cauwenberghs), encouraged NCAS members to contribute to the ISCAS 2003 Special Sessions. Detailed information is available from the ISCAS 2003 Web site http://www.iscas2003.org, under link: Special Sessions.

ELECTION OF TC NCAS OFFICERS (Term ending at ISCAS 2003):

Prepared by: G. Setti, L. Goldgeisser, G. M. Maggio, Y. Nishio, and Lj. Trajkovic.
