Abstract

In an era where sustainability is paramount, the design of low-power integrated circuits (ICs) plays a critical role in reducing energy consumption and mitigating environmental impact. This talk explores innovative strategies in low-power IC design to address the growing demand for energy-efficient electronics in applications ranging from IoT devices to large-scale computing systems. By leveraging advanced techniques such as subthreshold operation, power gating, clock gating, and dynamic voltage scaling, we present a framework for optimizing performance while minimizing power dissipation. The discussion highlights the interplay between circuit-level innovations, including the strategic use of clock gating to reduce dynamic power in idle states, process technology advancements, and system-level integration, emphasizing their collective contribution to a sustainable world. Through simulation results and case studies, we demonstrate how these approaches can significantly lower the carbon footprint of electronic systems, paving the way for greener technology solutions that align with global sustainability goals.

Biography
Victor Grimblatt holds an engineering diploma in microelectronics from Institut Nationale Polytechnique de Grenoble (INPG, France) and an electronic engineering diploma from Universidad Tecnica Federico Santa Maria (Chile). He earned his PhD in Electronics from the University of Bordeaux in 2021. Currently, he serves as the R&D Executive Director and General Manager of Synopsys Chile.

Victor has published several papers on IoT, EDA, Smart Agriculture, and embedded systems development. From 2012 to 2024, he chaired the IEEE Chilean chapter of the CASS. He has participated in various conferences as part of the Technical Program Committees (TPC) and Steering Committees, including ISCAS, ICECS, LASCAS, and VLSI SoC. He served on the IEEE CASS Board of Governors from 2021 to 2023 and was reelected for the period 2025-2027.

He founded the Electronics for Agrifood Special Interest Group (SIG) at CASS and chaired it until 2024. Victor also chaired the LASCAS Steering Committee from 2018 to 2022 and represented CASS at the IEEE Climate Change TAB. He is currently the CASS representative at the IEEE IoT TAB.

Victor was President of the Chilean Electronic and Electrical Industry Association (AIE) from 2017 to 2021. He was a member of the "Chilean Offshoring Committee" organized by the Minister of Economy of Chile from 2006 to 2008.

In 2010, he was awarded "Innovator of the Year in Services Export." In 2022, he received the "IEEE/AIE Best Engineer" award in Chile, followed by the "IEEE R9 Outstanding Engineer" award in 2023. In 2024, he received the "CASS Meritorious Service Award."

Victor's research areas include Electronic Design Automation (EDA), Climate Change, and Smart Agriculture.
