He has served on the university’s Education and Research Council since 2014 and previously led the Computer Engineering Division from 2014 to 2022. He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from the National University of Electro-Communications (UEC) in Tokyo in 2002. Dr. Ben Abdallah’s research focuses on high-performance, energy-efficient computing systems, neuromorphic circuits and architectures, fault-tolerant on-chip networks, and embedded systems. He has authored four books and more than 160 peer-reviewed publications, including Neuromorphic Computing: Principles and Organization, which BookAuthority recognized in 2025 as the best neuromorphic computing book of all time. His work has been supported by 17 competitive research grants, and he holds 14 patents in processor architecture, neuromorphic systems, and intelligent energy platforms. His recent innovations include an AI-powered off-grid solar carport and a full-cycle parallel processor design project spanning ISA definition to hardware prototyping. He has served as the founding and standing chair of the IEEE MCSoC Forum since its inception, and as Associate Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Computer and as an Associate Editor for IEEE Network Magazine and Frontiers in Neuroscience: Neuromorphic Engineering. He is a contributor to the IEEE P3722 Standard on Responsible AI in Higher Education and a member of the IEEE CASS CASEO Technical Committee. His professional service includes refereeing for IEEE TC, IEEE JSSC, IEEE TVLSI, and ACM JETC, and serving as a TPC member for IEEE ISCAS, IEEE COOLChips, and IEEE MCSoC. He has delivered invited lectures at leading institutions, held multiple visiting professorships, and given more than 23 keynote and invited talks worldwide. He has received multiple Best Paper and Best Presentation Awards and has served on governmental and international grant review boards.
